For twenty years, the goal of digital visibility was simple: rank on page one, get the
click, win the traffic. That model is quietly breaking. Across the industry, “zero-click
search” has become one of the most searched marketing terms of 2026, and for
good reason – a growing share of searches now end without a single click, because
Google’s AI Overviews or a tool like ChatGPT has already answered the question
directly, on the results page or inside the chat window itself.
For brands, this is more than a technical shift. It changes what “visibility” actually
means. It no longer matters only whether you rank – it matters whether you’re the
source an AI model chooses to cite, quote or reference when it answers someone’s
question. Being right isn’t enough if a model has never learned that you’re the
authority on the subject. This is the conversation we were having on stage at
#SeamlessMiddleEast this year with Serviceplan’s Mahmoud Alhamed, and it’s one
every brand and every PR team needs to start having internally, because the old
scoreboard no longer tells the full story.
So, what does this mean practically? First, credibility has to be built in places AI
models actually read – third-party coverage, expert commentary, well-structured
content that answers real questions clearly, and consistent language around who
you are and what you do across the web. AI tools tend to synthesise from sources
that already agree with each other, so fragmented or inconsistent messaging quietly
costs you visibility you’ll never see measured in a click-through report.
Second, PR’s role shifts from “get the placement” to “get the placement that gets
cited.” A single feature in a high-authority outlet, backed by clear expert quotes and
specific, quotable data, is worth more in this new landscape than a dozen low-
authority mentions. Quality and clarity are being rewarded over volume.
Third, measurement has to evolve too. Traffic and click-through rate are becoming
incomplete metrics. Brands are increasingly investing in AI visibility tracking – tools
that show whether and how often a brand is being surfaced or cited within AI-
generated answers, because that’s where a meaningful share of discovery is quietly
moving.
None of this means SEO or traditional PR are dead. It means the finish line has
moved. The brands that win in this next phase won’t just be the ones ranking
highest, they’ll be the ones AI trusts enough to speak on their behalf. That’s a
fundamentally different discipline, and one that rewards depth, consistency and
genuine authority over algorithm-chasing. For GCC brands especially, many of
whom are still optimising purely for traditional search, this is a real opportunity to
move first while the playing field is still wide open.
