If you’ve ever been told to “get press coverage for SEO” you’ve probably also been told very little about which press actually counts.
Not all backlinks are created equal, and in the UAE’s crowded media landscape, chasing quantity is one of the fastest ways to waste a PR budget.
Here’s what actually matters.
Authority, not appearances
Search engines evaluate backlinks as trust signals – and they’ve become far more
selective about which sources they trust. A single link from a high-authority UAE
publication routinely outweighs dozens of links from directories, low-quality blogs, or
pay-to-publish sites. Quality has quietly become the whole game.
In the UAE, a small handful of outlets sit at the top of that authority ladder. Khaleej
Times currently carries the highest Domain Authority of the major English-language
titles, with Gulf News close behind and the UAE’s highest overall traffic. The National and
Arabian Business round out the tier that search engines – and increasingly, AI platforms –
treat as genuinely credible sources. For Arabic-language visibility, which matters given
roughly 40% of UAE searches happen in Arabic, a placement in Al Bayan carries a
distinct authority signal that no English-language coverage can replicate.
Earned beats built
The distinction that matters most isn’t which outlet, but how the link was earned. A
backlink a journalist chose to include – because the story, the data, or the expert
commentary was genuinely useful to their readers – sends a far stronger trust signal
than a link a brand paid or asked for directly. Google treats editorial decisions differently
to manufactured ones, and that gap is widening, not narrowing.
This is why the strongest PR strategies aren’t built around chasing placements. They’re
built around creating something worth referencing: original research, a founder’s
genuine expertise, a data-led story, or commentary tied to a real news moment. Outlets
don’t cover press releases; they cover stories.
The AI layer changes the stakes
There’s a newer reason this matters now more than ever. As more people discover
information through AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews rather
than traditional search results, these systems lean heavily on trusted citations and
recognised entities when deciding what to surface. A brand with a consistent footprint
across credible UAE media isn’t just ranking better in Google – it’s becoming easier for AI
systems to recognise, verify, and reference at all. Authority earned today compounds
into visibility tomorrow, across every discovery channel that matters.
If SEO is the goal, the question isn’t “how much coverage can we get” – it’s “which
handful of outlets will actually move our domain authority, and what story earns us a
place in them.” A single feature in Khaleej Times or Gulf News will outperform a stack of
lower-tier mentions every time. Build the strategy around earning the right coverage,
not accumulating the most.
