According to well respected ENT Consultant, Dr Abdul Ghani Siddique who is based at Dubai London Clinic, Nakheel Mall on the Palm Jumeirah, research has shown that those snorers who suffer from Sleep Apnea are significantly more likely to be involved in a traffic accident, which is extremely concerning when you consider how many people are walking around undiagnosed and untreated.
Snoring has a ‘hidden threat’ within itself and although it is a fairly prevalent disorder, it can often lead to serious medical problems and should not be ignored. Dr Siddique explains that snoring is the first indication of the Sleep Apnea disorder that is hidden and if left undiagnosed, extreme cases of Sleep Apnea can cause a patient to slip into a medical complication such as high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, chronic lung disease, stroke, diabetes or even an increase in road traffic and work accidents.
Day time symptoms of Sleep Apnea can include excessive sleepiness, headaches, mood swings, impotence and poor work performance while sleeping symptoms might include snoring, restless sleep, and sleep disruptions, waking up choking, acid reflux, nocturia and heavy sweating.
While many people often joke about the heavy snoring of a family member or a friend, it could be an indication of a very serious problem and Dr Siddique recommends that people who snore, visit an ENT Specialist to either diagnose and treat the problem or to give themselves and loved ones’ peace of mind. ‘What many people don’t realise, that snoring is not hopeless condition and lot can be done about it. So, if you are concerned about your snoring, please visit an ENT before your snoring or sleep apnea develops into something more serious.’
Dr Siddique spent years training and working in some of the most reputable hospitals across the UK, and after moving to the UAE in 1996 and built a reputation for himself within the medical industry in the region.
