Podcast content marketing can be a very powerful way to build a brand and generate a loyal audience. It is one of the fastest-growing ways to reach an audience but with over 500,000 different podcasts already out there how do you go about starting your own?
Here is a mini guide that we hope will get you started…
1: BRAINSTORM – As we know, the podcast market is a busy one, so when you decide to start a new one you need to ensure that you know what you’re aiming to achieve from it. Make sure you sit down and brainstorm your approach, strategy, and USPs.
2: RESEARCH: Before finalizing your podcast content and strategy make sure to do your research into podcasts that are already out there in your sector to ensure it isn’t already covered or within a saturated subject
3: YOUR IDENTITY: Picking a name can be very difficult, but it is very important for a podcast as it can be a make or break for getting new listeners and subscribers. You will also need to think about your podcast description and branding.
4: FORMAT AND STYLE: Are you doing this alone? Maybe you want to be two or more people? Make sure that you work this out ahead of the launch. More than three people can be confusing and hard to follow, the best format is usually solo or with a maximum of two hosts. Deciding this in advance will ensure a coherent episode style.
5: PLANNING: Having a solid content calendar will ensure that you are organized in advance along with creating a good mix of content going out to your listeners.
6: THE PILOT: Your first episode is the most important one (No pressure!). This is the one that will keep your potential listeners hooked, so make it a good one! Pre-record it and ensure it has engaging content in line with your overall direction.
7: HOST PLATFORM: Who is going to host your podcast once it is live? Make sure to do the research and secure a platform in advance where possible. Key platforms include iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play.
8: MARKETING STRATEGY: Once you have your podcast out there you need to increase your subscribers through a strong marketing campaign including a website, email marketing, social media, and PR.
Our last point would be to stay positive and don’t give up! Research shows that creating a successful podcast can take up to 2 years of regular episodes. A lot of people give up before this time frame so make sure you are in it for the long run.
